Using data from the Survey of Employment, Payrolls, and Hours, the poll estimated that as of last May, 26,000 roles were no longer employed. With 2,500 and 30,000 employment openings, respectively, Manitoba and Ontario experienced the largest losses. British Columbia was the only province to experience a rise in payroll employees.

Payroll employee reductions are common in the majority of industries. According to recent economic data, the service sector, which includes employment in industries like education, healthcare, and social support, has seen some of the biggest declines. The sources state that this resulted in the termination of almost 17,000 payroll employees.

Additionally, the sector of construction as a whole had a large decline in employment. The number of employed persons fell by over 17,500 in May, the lowest number since July 2021.

The province of Ontario lost almost two-thirds of the lost construction employment. Strikes that took place across the province are to blame for a large portion of this loss and the resulting delays on numerous projects.

The number of retail jobs is still higher than it was in 2021. Ontario lost the most retail employment nationwide, leading the country.

Weekly Salaries are up 2.5%

The retail trade industry saw the biggest growth in weekly pay for May despite the general drop in employment, with a 9.3% increase over the same period in 2021. Likewise, there has been an 8.1% increase in the pay for technical, scientific, and professional services.

The weekly average pay in the arts, leisure, and recreation sector, on the other hand, fell by 9.7%.

For the thirteenth straight month, Manitoba and Nova Scotia had the most employment opportunities in the accommodation and food services sectors.

Job Openings Exceed Unemployment
